Asplenium Bulbiferum (Hen and Chickens / Mother Fern) — an elegant perennial fern native to New Zealand and Australia. It is highly prized for its large, finely dissected, feathery bright-green fronds. Its most distinctive feature is the collection of tiny bulbils (baby ferns) that develop directly on top of the mature fronds, giving the plant a unique, lush appearance. Moderately easy to grow, it is perfect for low-light rooms, terrariums, and shaded patios.
Asplenium Bulbiferum Care Guide:
Hardiness zone (USDA zone): 9b-11.
Light: Bright indirect light or partial shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate fronds.
Watering: Regular. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Avoid waterlogged soil and complete drying out.
Temperature: Moderate: 65–75°F. Protect from drafts, AC vents, and sudden drops below 55°F.
Humidity: High (60%+). Requires regular misting, a humidifier, or a tray filled with wet pebbles.
Soil: Loose, well-draining, slightly acidic. A mix for ferns with peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark.
Toxicity: Safe. Non-toxic to humans, cats, and dogs.
