Calathea Ornata, known in the US as the Pinstripe Plant, is a tropical indoor plant from South America. It forms a dense clump of large, glossy dark green leaves with beautiful, thin pink stripes that turn white over time. The undersides of the leaves are a deep purple color to help the plant catch light under the jungle canopy. At night, it uses a natural joint at the base of each leaf to fold its foliage vertically, a unique movement typical of the prayer plant family.
Calathea Ornata Care Guide:
Hardiness zone (USDA zone): 11-12.
Light: Medium indirect light. Avoid direct harsh sunlight, which can burn the leaves and bleach the beautiful pink stripes.
Watering: Medium to high. Keep the soil consistently, lightly moist but never waterlogged. Do not allow the root ball to dry out completely.
Temperature: Warm. Thrives in stable conditions between 65-85°F; shield from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.
Humidity: High. Requires high humidity levels (50-60% or higher); benefits from humidifiers, terrarium placement, or pebble trays.
Soil: Well-drained soil. Use a loose, lightweight, slightly acidic potting mix with peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark.
Fertilizer: Feed every two weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble foliage plant fertilizer diluted to 1/4 or 1/2 strength.
