Fiber Optic Grass (Isolepis Cernua) — a unique, moisture-loving ornamental grass with slender, thread-like bright green blades. Tiny flower beads tip the foliage, creating a stunning fairy-light or fiber-optic effect. Perfect for undrained pots, terrariums, bog gardens, and shallow water setups. This low-maintenance plant forms a dense, lush tuft over time and has a graceful weeping growth habit. It grows continuously year-round indoors and is highly valued for its ability to thrive in constantly saturated soil where other plants suffer from overwatering.
Fiber Optic Grass Care Guide:
Hardiness zone (USDA zone): 8-11.
Light: Full sun to bright indirect light. It thrives and blooms best under bright sunlight, but also easily adapts to partially shaded spaces near house windows.
Watering: Heavy watering required. Keep the soil consistently wet or saturated at all times. Never let it dry out, because even a brief dry period can cause the blades to turn brown.
Temperature: Ideal: 65–75°F. Winter minimum: 50°F. Move the plant indoors for winter to protect it from freezing temperatures, frost, and cold drafts.
Humidity: Highly adaptable. It tolerates average indoor air well and does not require extra misting as long as the soil remains constantly wet and muddy.
Soil: Rich, moisture-retaining, slightly acidic. A premium organic potting mix with a high percentage of peat moss works best to hold water.
Fertilizing: Monthly in spring/summer using balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength on damp soil to promote lush growth and prevent root burn.
It is advisable to purchase a heat pack during cold weather: Heat Pack
