The Heart Fern (Hemionitis arifolia) is a small tropical fern from Southeast Asia that grows from a short root system. This plant has two types of dark green leaves growing on dark, furry stems. The main lower leaves are thick, leathery, and shaped like perfect hearts up to 3 inches long. The taller leaves are spear-shaped and produce fine spores on their undersides for reproduction.

Hemionitis Arifolia Care Guide:

Hardiness zone (USDA zone): 10 – 11.
Light: Prefers medium to bright indirect sunlight. Keep shielded from harsh, direct sun to prevent leaf scorch and dehydration.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Water when the surface layer dries, avoiding pouring water directly into the central crown.
Temperature: Maintain stable indoor temperatures between 60°F and 85°F. Protect the plant from chilly window drafts.
Humidity: Requires high relative humidity between 60% and 90%. Ideal for growing in humidifiers, indoor terrariums, or on wet pebble trays.
Soil: Use an organic, well-draining potting substrate mix containing peat moss, perlite, and fine bark pieces.
Fertilizer: Apply a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength once a month during spring and summer.
