Sarracenia purpurea ssp. Venosa is a carnivorous herbaceous plant. It forms a compact, low-growing rosette of pitcher-traps. The pitchers are short, tubby, and feature a wide rim with a ruffled, upright hood that stays open to collect rainwater. The foliage is lime-green with a contrasting, dense network of dark purple-red veins. The entire outer surface of the pitchers is covered in softly pubescent (fuzzy) hairs.

Sarracenia Purpurea Care Guide:
Hardiness zone (USDA zone): 4-9.
Light: Full sun.
Watering: Use pure water only (distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis). Never use regular tap water or bottled mineral water. Tray method: Keep the pot sitting in a shallow tray filled with 0.5–1 inch of water. Fill the pitchers: Unlike upright pitcher plants, Sarracenia Purpurea needs its pitchers filled halfway with water to digest food. Top them up manually if it doesn't rain.
Temperature: Summer: 68–95°F. Dormant period (Wintering): Requires a cold rest period of 3–4 months from October to February. Keep temperatures between 32°F and 45°F. Unheated garages, porches, or cold windowsills work perfectly. Reduce watering during this time; keep the soil just damp, not waterlogged. Do not panic if old pitchers turn brown and die back.
Humidity: 50–70%. Good air circulation is required. Do not mist the pitchers directly.
Soil: Peat (pH 3-5): perlite / quartz sand (2:1). The use of a neutral or alkaline substrate will lead to the death of the plant. Never use standard potting soil.
Toxicity: Non-toxic. Sarracenia Purpurea is safe and listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs. The pitchers contain digestive fluid. If a pet ingests the fluid or chews on a leaf, it is not poisonous. Eating a large amount of plant fiber might cause mild, temporary stomach upset or vomiting.
